Go Daddy Markets Affordable EV SSL Certificates

Domain registrar and web hosting providerGo Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced that it is offering Extended Validation certificates at an affordable price.

Go Daddy EV SSL cetificates are priced at less than $200 per year, which costs up to seven times less than its competitors, says the company.

EV SSL turn the address bar of a browser green and identifies the name of the corporation, making it easy to see which organization received the certificate.

The vetting process for Extended Validation is significantly more involved than other certificates. The guidelines, established by the CA/Browser Forum make the EV vetting process identical at any Certificate Authority, which raises questions as to why the price range can be so varied, says Go Daddy.

“The fact [that] someone is charging more than seven times as much as Go Daddy for an identical product is absolutely unnecessary,” says Warren Adelman, Go Daddy president and chief operating officer. “We entered the domain name business because it was overpriced and underserved and that is exactly why we entered the SSL market.”

All Go Daddy certificates include an unlimited server license so customers can use a single certificate on multiple servers and potentially save companies thousands of dollars, says the company.

Last month, Go Daddy announced that a recent Netcraft report revealed that the company was leading the market’s domain-only validated SSL certificates sales, showing the largest net growth in 11 of the last 12 months.

This, of course, is just one of the three categories for SSL certificates, the other two being organization or business validated SSL certificates, and extended validation SSL certificates.

VeriSign continues to lead SSL certificate sales for these other categories, with Comodo following in second.

By marketing its EV SSL certificates at a lower pricing, Go Daddy hopes to gain some of this market share from its competitors.

Go Daddy’s strategy has always been defined by using competitive pricing to build its customer base. This strategy has certainly helped the company in being one of the market’s top leaders in domain registration and web hosting sales.
