New Study Reveals Businesses Unknowingly Pass Up On Big IT Cost Savings
Despite an overwhelming effort by businesses to reduce unnecessary IT costs, many organizations miss out on big IT cost savings each year by prematurely upgrading networking infrastructure and insufficiently scrutinizing ongoing maintenance contracts. A new commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Network Hardware Resale[1], revealed that although an overwhelming number (76 percent) of IT decision-makers are concerned about the pressures to reduce costs, many are unaware of the available options that exist for alternative maintenance contracts and are unduly influenced by vendors regarding hardware refresh cycles. “After surveying 304 IT decision-makers, Forrester found that even though IT budgets are under constant scrutiny, businesses have defaulted to vendor influence which has blinded them to the rewards of extending hardware lifecycles and third-party maintenance solutions,” according to the Forrester Consulting study. Only 21 percent report that they have leveraged competitor third-party bids when negotiating service and maintenance contracts, while 80 percent claim they would leverage third-party maintenance if they found it to be more affordable than their current contract

Comparethemarket.com selects MongoDB to improve user experience
10gen’s non-relational database, MongoDB has helped transform comparethemarket.com’s customer experience. The upgrade to its Home Insurance offering comes as part of a wider renewal which aims to improve the performance, ergonomics and speed of the website. Checking tens of millions of prices for comparethemarket.com customers on a daily basis means the speed and efficiency that data is sent and retrieved is crucial to the company’s business. One hour’s downtime would have significant financial impact. The three top priorities for the new database were stability, speed to market and scalability. The open source NoSQL database, MongoDB, matched these needs perfectly. “Ultimately we want every single customer to have an exceptional experience,” explained Matthew Collinge, solutions architect at comparethemarket.com. “Our business model has changed significantly, but trying to make changes on the old system meant we spent our time dealing with complexity rather than adding any value.” The system needs to collect customer details efficiently and then securely send them to a number of different insurers.

Virtualization’s impact on enterprise-class cloud computing adoption trends
Although enterprise-class cloud computing offers innumerable benefits to businesses, rising adoption rates for virtualized environments may threaten the future growth of the enterprise cloud, according to Gartner analyst Michael Warrilow. In his latest report on expected private cloud adoption rates, Warrilow noted that its growth is not guaranteed because of the impact virtualization is having on enterprise environments. By 2015, likely far more data centers will host virtualized infrastructure. As a result, some firms may think it is more beneficial to maintain on-premise networks and to just make their legacy hardware solutions more efficient and effective by leveraging virtualization. Although virtualization can make servers and other on-premise equipment significantly more efficient, it still does not negate one of the enterprise cloud’s core benefits: off-site hosting of critical IT infrastructure, applications and data. Even virtualized environments require IT staff members to consistently oversee on-site hardware, which is one core reason why ZDNet contributor Ed Bott said the cloud is the go-to technology choice for the present and future.

Business Continuity Management offers great value if understood and applied correctly
Business Continuity Management (BCM) can offer great value – both in terms of value for money and stakeholder confidence – to an organisation, but more often than not it’s seen as a drain of resources insisted upon by external regulators or customers. Alan Calder, CEO of IT Governance, says, “Business continuity management is essential for every organisation that is dependent on people, systems and technology, to operate. I cannot think of one that is not. Adverse events will always happen – only a proven approach to business continuity management can help an organisation survive a big disaster and get back to business as usual. “An on-going process of business continuity and risk management will also help you improve processes and efficiency and leave you better prepared to exploit new opportunities.” Books are a useful resource for shaping a BCM strategy and creating a business continuity plan (BCP) when budgets are tight. The following books are already popular amongst business continuity professionals: Everything you want to know about Business Continuity explains what the most effective approach to BCM is and the difference it makes to corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and directors’ contingent liabilities.
